Arc Browser Is Shutting Down: December 22, 2026

Tech news

If you've been following Arc Browser's uncertain future, we finally have an answer. The Browser Company has officially announced that Arc accounts will be deactivated. When I last wrote about Arc, its future was uncertain. The company had stopped focusing on major new features and shifted its attention to Dia, its new AI-powered browser.

Now, the end is approaching. So, what does this mean for existing Arc users? What happens to your data? And is Dia a worthy replacement? Let's take a look.

Arc browser is dead email

Arc Browser is now officially a dead project

The Browser Company has confirmed that Arc for macOS and Windows will remain available with basic updates until December 22, 2026. After that date, users will no longer be able to sign in to their existing Arc accounts, hence no longer using the once beloved browser.

There's another important detail: personal data associated with Arc accounts will be deleted within 30 days after deactivation. If you're still using Arc, it's time to start planning your next move.

Why is The Browser Company abandoning Arc?

When Arc arrived, it offered something genuinely different from traditional browsers. Its vertical sidebar, Spaces, pinned tabs, and minimalist interface made browsing feel more like an organized workspace.

It quickly became a favorite among designers, developers, and productivity-focused users.

In December 2024, The Browser Company announced that it would stop pursuing major new features for Arc and focus on their new browser Dia instead. This latest announcement makes that decision much more definitive. The company says maintaining browser security requires constant work, particularly in the age of AI. Dia was built to meet its current security standards, and the engineering and security teams will now focus there. In short, The Browser Company is fully moving on from Arc rather than developing two separate browsers.

What happens to your Arc data?

Fortunately, you don't have to start from scratch if you're moving to Dia.

The Browser Company says you can import your existing setup into Dia, including:

  • Passwords and bookmarks

  • Browser extensions and browsing history

  • Spaces, Folders, and Tab Groups

  • Favorites and pinned tabs

Your Spaces will be imported as Profiles in Dia, and the migration is available on both macOS and Windows. You can also export a list of your Arc tabs if you decide to use another browser.

One important warning: don't leave this until the last minute. Make sure your passwords, bookmarks, and other important information have transferred successfully before relying on your new browser.

Is Dia a worthy replacement for Arc?

Dia is the browser The Browser Company wants Arc users to move to. It retains several familiar organizational features while taking a different approach, with a stronger focus on AI-assisted browsing. The company says that the browser features Arc users rely on are free in Dia, and its AI features are optional.

That's encouraging, but importing your tabs and folders doesn't necessarily mean Dia will feel like Arc. The overall interface and workflow are different, and whether you'll enjoy the experience depends on what you loved about Arc in the first place.

If you want to stick with the same team, Dia is the obvious place to start.

You can find it on Dia's official website or try something new like Zen Browser.

What are the best alternatives to Arc Browser?

If Dia isn't for you, there are other browsers worth considering.

  • Zen: A strong option if yu want something that feels similar to how Arc felt.

  • Brave: Worth considering if privacy and built-in tracker blocking are priorities.

  • Firefox: An established alternative with its own browser engine and a broad extension ecosystem.

I'd recommend trying a couple of options before making a permanent switch. A browser can look great on paper but still feel wrong when you're using it every day.

So… is Arc Browser finally dead?

This time, the answer is much clearer than it was when I last covered Arc. The Browser Company is moving forward with Dia, leaving Arc behind. For many users, Arc wasn't just another browser. It was a fresh take on how we organize tabs, navigate the web, and manage our digital lives. That's why this announcement feels like the end of an era.

Personally, I think the biggest question is whether Dia can recreate the experience that made people fall in love with Arc in the first place. Transferring bookmarks is easy. Replacing a browser you genuinely enjoy using is much harder.

If you're still using Arc, start preparing now. Explore the alternatives, and make sure your data is safe before December 22. Arc's future is no longer uncertain. The question is what comes next.
