Your homepage is often the first thing people see when they visit your website. So naturally, you want it to explain everything: who you are, what you do, your services, your story, your latest projects, your values...
Before you know it, your homepage is trying to do the job of your entire website. And that's when things start to get complicated.

The problem with an overloaded homepage
A homepage should help visitors quickly understand what you do and where to go next. When it tries to communicate everything at once, the experience becomes confusing and overwhelming.
Here are some common problems with overloaded homepages.
Too many messages
If every section of your homepage is trying to communicate something different, visitors can struggle to understand what actually matters.
Your main message gets buried, and people have to work harder to figure out what your business actually does.
Too many calls to action
"Learn more."
"Contact us."
"Book a meeting."
"View our services."
"Read our latest news."
Every button might make sense on its own, but together they can create decision fatigue.
If everything is asking for attention, nothing feels important.
Trying to say everything
Your homepage doesn't need to contain your entire company story.
Your services can have their own pages. Your case studies can have their own section. Your company history can live on your About page.
The homepage should introduce your business and guide visitors to the information they're looking for.
How to fix it
Simplifying your homepage doesn't mean removing important information. It's about prioritising what visitors actually need.
Give your homepage one clear purpose
Ask yourself: What do I want visitors to understand or do after visiting this page?
Maybe it's contacting you, booking a meeting, buying a product or exploring your work.
Whatever it is, make that goal clear.
Prioritise the important stuff
Not everything needs to appear above the fold.
Think about what visitors need to know first, rather than everything they might eventually want to know. Your most important message should be easy to find. Supporting information can come later.
Make your website easy to scan
Most people don't read a homepage word for word. They scan it.
Use clear headings, short paragraphs, whitespace, images and a strong visual hierarchy to make the important information easy to find.
A visitor should be able to skim your homepage and still understand what you do.
What a good homepage looks like
Imagine you're a web design studio.
Instead of saying:
"We are a full-service digital agency specialising in innovative, user-centred digital solutions for businesses of all sizes..."
Try:
Websites that make your business easier to understand.
We design clear, modern websites for businesses that want to communicate better online.
View our work
Simple. Clear. And you immediately understand what the business does and where you can go next.
The rest of the website can provide the details.
My take
Your homepage isn't supposed to tell visitors everything. It's supposed to tell them what matters most.
The best homepage designs aren't necessarily the ones with the most content or the most sections. They're the ones that make it immediately clear what the website is about and what to do next.
So before adding another section to your homepage, ask yourself:
Does this actually help the visitor?
If it doesn't, maybe it belongs somewhere else.
Your homepage isn't your entire website. It's the starting point.

Karlsson bil
